There is a LOT to do in India so we hope you all have been planning a month vacation around the wedding 🙂 Jokes apart, we know that some of you will only be able to make it for a few days while others will have several weeks, of course impacting traveling plans. So here are a few ideas to help you orient your decisions on what to do while in India.
GOA
One option is to join us in Goa October 6-11, but this is of course not a must, and only for people who have time after the wedding. More information here.
VERY-SHORT STAY
DELHI
For the very short stays, you should probably spend one or two days visiting Delhi before or after the wedding:
- The bazaars in Connaught Place, Chandni Chowk, Sarojini Nagar, Lajpat Nagar…
- The architectural wonders such as the Red Fort, India Gate, Humayun’s Tomb (from which the Taj Mahal was inspired), Akshardham…
SPIRITUAL FEEL
With only a few days in addition to the wedding it should also be possible to go spend some time in Haridwar or Rishikesh, cities located on the Ganga not too far from the wedding location (on the opposite side of the Jim Corbett National Park). This would give you the chance to experience the spirituality of these places and admire the Ghat, these famous staircases plunging into the Ganga. It is also quite easy to get back to Delhi from these cities by train or by bus in about 5/6 hours.
JIM CORBETT NATIONAL PARK
The hotels bordering the Jim Corbett National Park all offer safari tours for half a day or a day in the park. This could be an option for the day after the wedding or the next (October 6th or 7th). Note that if you’re interested in this option you will not be able to catch the organised transportation back to Delhi on October 6th in the morning. We trust you’ll manage to find your way back on your own 😉
Please let us know if you could be interested in such a safari tour and we’ll directly ask the hotels we booked what safari options they have.
Jim Corbett is a big national park and besides safaris there are also a number of interesting places to go within the park so do not hesitate to look for other sightseeing activities in the area.
A BIT MORE TIME
GOLDEN TRIANGLE
The Golden Triangle is made of the following 3 cities: Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. It is a nice 1-week tour because the cities are not too far apart (longest travel time is 4/5 hours between Jaipur and Delhi).
The only reason to go to Agra is to visit the Taj Mahal, but it is a good one given how majestic the mausoleum is. Jaipur is the largest city of Rajasthan, also called the pink city, it is worth the detour. Though a popular touristic destination, there are other interesting cities in Rajasthan (Udaipur, Jodhpur…) but they are further away from Delhi and therefore require more time to travel to.
KAUSANI
Kausani is located a 5-hour drive North East from the Solluna Resort. This hill station is perched at almost 2000m high, provides great views on the Himalayas, and is a good starting point for hikes in the area. Spending a few cool days in the mountains could also appeal to some of you 😉
A LOT MORE TIME
RAJASTHAN
Rajasthan, a desert state, is the largest Indian state, attracting a lot of tourists every year for a variety of reasons (check the Wikipedia page 😉 ). You would probably need at least a week in order to explore Rajasthan properly given the long distances involved.
HIKING IN THE HIMALAYAS
Being so close to the Himalayas, it will be difficult for the mountain-lovers amongst us to resist the appeal of these famous peaks. One week will again probably be the very minimum in order to make the effort of going all the way to the start of the hike worth it 🙂
We would ideally recommend 7-10 days, including the travel time, for any trekking plans. With even more free time you unlock the amazing treks in Nepal as well (Annapurna Trek, Manaslu Trek, Everest Base Camp Trek…). Note that you will need an additional e-VISA to get to Nepal and also that there is plenty of hiking in Uttarkhand where the wedding takes place so you don’t absolutely have to go to Nepal…
Trekking without a guide / an agency is possible, especially for the most famous treks in Nepal, but it will be easier to get an agency to organise things for you. It is usually quite cheap and makes everything much simpler, especially if you are not planning on bringing the gear with you.
In any case, just get in touch if you have some questions around the topic! We could definitely give you additional tips and we also have a lot of hiking maps acquired in Kathmandu that could be helpful for some planning 😉
ANYWHERE ELSE
With a lot more time you could basically fly anywhere, Kerala is for example a beautiful South Indian state known for its backwaters while Assam in the East is known for its tea plantations.
